Shopify knowledge base moves to admin — what merchants should do

“Nothing Shopify drafted reaches AI agents until you publish it.”
— Shopify, Shopify Changelog
What happened
The Shopify knowledge base that feeds AI shopping agents is now built directly into the Shopify admin, replacing the standalone Knowledge Base app. Shopify announced the change in its changelog on October 26, 2026, and said the old app will stop being available after January 15, 2027.
The new page sits under Sales channels > Agentic in the admin. It holds the non-product facts AI agents use when a shopper asks about your store in an AI chat: return and warranty rules, payment options, delivery and fulfillment, contact details, gift services, brand information and more, sorted into ten categories plus an “Additional facts” section for anything you want to write yourself. Shopify drafts many of these facts by scanning your published storefront pages and pulling data from admin settings such as Policies and Shipping and delivery. Scanned facts stay unpublished until you approve them, and you can publish or unpublish everything, a whole category or a single field.
Published facts are made publicly available through Shopify’s Storefront MCP, which Shopify’s own Shop channel and third-party AI platforms can query. The knowledge base holds up to 1,000 facts. Stores that used the old app with 1,000 facts or fewer had them moved over and published automatically; stores with more were not migrated and must re-add the facts they want to keep before the January 15 deadline. Shopify says it has emailed those merchants. According to Search Engine Journal, the new page does not show the customer-question log that the old app’s metrics page offered.
FuzeForth’s take
This is a small admin change with a big idea behind it: AI agents are becoming a real storefront, and Shopify is now treating your store facts as structured data for those agents, not just text on a policy page. When a shopper asks an AI assistant “Does this store take returns on sale items?” or “How fast do they ship to Texas?”, the answer may come from this knowledge base rather than your website. If the facts are missing, outdated or unpublished, the agent either guesses or tells the shopper it doesn’t know, and that sale goes to a competitor whose answers are clear.
Every Shopify merchant should spend 20 minutes on this page this week. Open the knowledge base, read each category, and publish only what is accurate. Pay special attention to anything Shopify drafted from a scan: scans can miss recent changes, so holiday shipping cutoffs, return windows and promotion terms should be checked by hand. If you ran a large FAQ in the old app, confirm whether your facts were moved; if not, rebuild the most important ones before mid-January, and do it before the holiday rush rather than during it.
The bigger lesson applies beyond Shopify. The same consistency that helps an AI agent answer correctly also helps Google’s AI Overviews and ChatGPT describe your business accurately. Keep your policies identical across your site, your admin and your knowledge base, and treat AI search optimization as part of store operations. If you want agents to handle customer questions end to end, our AI agents for business and our ecommerce technology services pages explain how we approach it.

Frequently asked questions
Where is the Shopify knowledge base in the admin?
It is under Sales channels > Agentic in your Shopify admin. Store owners and staff with the App development or Agentic permissions can view and manage it.
Do I need to do anything if I used the old Knowledge Base app?
If your store had 1,000 facts or fewer, Shopify moved and published them automatically, but it is still worth reviewing them. If you had more than 1,000, your facts were not migrated, and you need to add the ones you want to keep before January 15, 2027.
Will Shopify publish facts to AI agents without my approval?
Facts Shopify drafts from scanning your storefront stay unpublished until you publish them. Facts linked to admin data, such as store policies and contact details, are published when Shopify creates them, and you can unpublish any fact at any time.
