Google AI Mode ads expand — what it means for your business

“To allow ads in follow-up queries in AI Mode, we are launching multiturn ads in the U.S.”
— Shashi Thakur, VP and GM, Google Search Ads, The Keyword (Google blog)
What happened
Google AI Mode ads are expanding: on October 28, 2026, Google announced it is bringing ads in AI Mode to 10 more countries and launching “multiturn” ads in the U.S. that can appear on follow-up questions inside an AI Mode conversation. The announcement came from Shashi Thakur, Google’s VP and GM for Search Ads, on Google’s official blog.
The new markets are Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Singapore, with Brazil, Mexico and the United Kingdom planned for the fourth quarter of 2026. Google first put ads into AI Mode in May 2025. Until now, an ad typically had its chance on the first answer; with multiturn ads, a sponsored result can also show up when someone keeps the conversation going, for example by narrowing a request or comparing options. Google says the ads will be clearly labeled “Sponsored” and appear when a search or conversation has commercial relevance.
Google also shared two numbers advertisers will notice. It says AI Mode queries are, on average, three times longer than traditional searches, and that click-through rates are already similar between sponsored and organic product listings within AI Mode, based on its own U.S. data. Google did not name new ad formats, saying only that it will keep testing them. The news landed the same day Alphabet reported third-quarter results, in which Google pointed to growing AI Mode use as one factor behind slower search ad growth.
FuzeForth’s take
This is the clearest sign yet that AI search is becoming a paid channel, not just an organic one. For small and mid-size businesses, the important change is the follow-up question. People in AI Mode don’t type “plumber near me” and leave; they ask, refine, and ask again. Multiturn ads mean the business that shows up on the third, more specific question — the one closest to a buying decision — can now be a paid placement. That moment used to belong only to whoever the AI chose to mention organically.
Who does this affect? Anyone running Google Ads in the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand or Singapore, and soon the UK. It also matters to businesses that don’t advertise at all: every sponsored slot inside an AI answer is space that organic results no longer get. Local service firms, ecommerce stores and professional practices that rely on high-intent searches should expect AI Mode to look more like a crowded results page over time.
What to do next: first, check your Google Ads account for how your campaigns are matching to longer, conversational searches — review search terms reports and make sure ads, landing pages and product feeds answer detailed questions, not just short keywords. Second, don’t treat paid and organic as separate projects. The content that earns a mention in an AI answer (clear service pages, FAQs, reviews, accurate business details) is the same content that makes an ad convert. If you want help, our AI search optimization work focuses on getting your business cited in AI answers, and our paid ads management team can tune campaigns for conversational search.
