DoorDash $12 Meal Boxes — what restaurants should do now

“Offering $12 Meal Boxes on DoorDash has helped us connect with new customers who may not have tried us before”

What happened

DoorDash is rolling out its $12 Meal Boxes to select areas of more than 20 U.S. cities, the company announced on November 2, 2026. Each Meal Box is a full-size entrée from a participating restaurant priced at a flat $12, with a $0 delivery fee and reduced service fees for customers.

The launch markets include Miami, Philadelphia, Chicago, Houston, Atlanta, Detroit, Boston and Charlotte. Diners find the offers in a dedicated “$12 Meal Box” tab in the DoorDash app. DoorDash says Meal Boxes average about 30% less than a typical entrée at participating restaurants, and Restaurant Dive notes the company has already offered the boxes in some markets for a while before this wider push.

DoorDash also shared early merchant results: up to a 40% increase in total sales, 65% of Meal Box orders coming from first-time customers, and top items averaging more than 300 orders in a single week. Those are DoorDash’s own figures; Restaurant Dive reported them without independent verification.

In the same announcement, DoorDash expanded its catering service nationwide for orders of 10 to 150+ people, with a $0 delivery fee (other fees still apply), ordering up to 14 days ahead, and an on-time guarantee. A new “Ask DoorDash for Catering” tool recommends a restaurant and menu based on group size, budget, cuisine and dietary needs.

FuzeForth’s take

The DoorDash Meal Box program is a value play aimed squarely at price-sensitive lunch customers, and that cuts both ways for independent restaurants. On the plus side, it is new-customer acquisition: if most Meal Box orders really come from people who have never ordered from you, a well-chosen box works like a paid sampling program. On the minus side, Restaurant Dive, citing recent analyses, notes that big fast-food chains have been backing away from deep value pricing because it squeezed margins without bringing enough traffic. A $12 price point only helps if the economics hold up.

The key unknown is cost. DoorDash’s merchant page says there’s “no added cost to join,” but neither DoorDash nor Restaurant Dive spells out commission rates or who absorbs the gap between your menu price and the $12 customer price. Before you sign up, ask the Meal Box specialist for the exact per-order payout in writing, then build a box around a dish with low food cost and fast prep. DoorDash says eligible meals must carry at least a $14 value before joining, and eligibility depends on location, ratings and meals, so strong reviews matter.

Most importantly, treat the box as a first date, not the relationship. Track which Meal Box customers come back, push them toward your full menu, and capture them on channels you own: Google reviews, your website ordering, and social. Delivery-app discovery is rented attention. Pairing it with your own social media marketing for local businesses and a clear restaurant technology plan is how you turn a $12 trial into repeat, higher-margin orders. Restaurants that cater should also review the new catering tools, because the new recommendation tool can influence which kitchens get suggested for group orders.
